Job 5:20-27

February 23rd, 2012

Job 5:20-27 (MSG)

In famine, he’ll keep you from starving, in war, from being gutted by the sword. You’ll be protected from vicious gossip and live fearless through any catastrophe. You’ll shrug off disaster and famine, and stroll fearlessly among wild animals. You’ll be on good terms with rocks and mountains; wild animals will become your good friends. You’ll know that your place on earth is safe, you’ll look over your goods and find nothing amiss. You’ll see your children grow up, your family lovely and lissome as orchard grass. You’ll arrive at your grave ripe with many good years, like sheaves of golden grain at harvest.”Yes, this is the way things are—my word of honor! Take it to heart and you won’t go wrong.”

What’s in a Marriage?

February 7th, 2012

Marriage is not the fairytale that most people, especially women, envision. The honeymoon stage of a marriage does not last very long. A couple must work at their marriage daily to keep their flame burning. Trials in a marriage are certainly difficult times, but if God is number one, center stage in your marriage, and the foundation of your life you will have incredible attestations for God’s faithfulness and transcendence. To be unified through His Mighty Name in the covenant of marriage your commitment can dominate all things.

People must enter into a marriage removing divorce from their vocabulary. We set ourselves up for destruction when we create a divorce safety net with an opt-out option. Understandably, individuals divorce for reasons such as adultery et al and when the Pharisees questioned Jesus about Moses permitting divorcing in the written Word of God it was because ours were hardened; we are stubborn! Jesus replied, “Moses permitted divorce only as a concession to your hard hearts, but it was not what God had originally intended” (Matthew 19:8).

The bible also says that if you are married to a non-believer and the non-believers walks away you can let them go. 1 Corinthians 7:15, “But if the unbeliever leaves, let it be so. The brother or the sister is not bound in such circumstances; God has called us to live in peace.” God wants his children to be happy and live in peace, but marriage is hard and we should not be defaulting to our opt-out option when things get a little shaky.

Trials and tribulations make a marriage stronger and even though you may not feel hopeful as you ride out the storm, your marriage will be better for it, stronger because of it, and filled with more love than you could have ever imagined. Why? Why does our love grow during hardships? There is something unexplainably powerful about having a spouse that will not get going when the going gets tough. There is something to be said for devotion, being each other’s rock and above all having faith in the Lord to pull your marriage through anything.

My advice to you is that when the going gets tough – don’t be so quick to get going. A marriage is built on the foundational love of God, sustained by faithfulness and blossoms into a beautiful flower every time it rains because after the rain the sun always comes back out.

Proverbs 31:10-31 (NIV)

A wife of noble character who can find?
She is worth far more than rubies.
Her husband has full confidence in her and lacks nothing of value.
She brings him good, not harm, all the days of her life.
She selects wool and flax and works with eager hands.
She is like the merchant ships, bringing her food from afar.
She gets up while it is still night; she provides food for her family and portions for her female servants.
She considers a field and buys it; out of her earnings she plants a vineyard.
She sets about her work vigorously; her arms are strong for her tasks.
She sees that her trading is profitable, and her lamp does not go out at night.
In her hand she holds the distaff and grasps the spindle with her fingers.
She opens her arms to the poor and extends her hands to the needy.
When it snows, she has no fear for her household; for all of them are clothed in scarlet.
She makes coverings for her bed; she is clothed in fine linen and purple.
Her husband is respected at the city gate, where he takes his seat among the elders of the land.
She makes linen garments and sells them, and supplies the merchants with sashes.
She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come.
She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue.
She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness.
Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her:
“Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all.”
Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised.
Honor her for all that her hands have done, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.
