Sometimes life throws you down in the dirt and sometimes we get right back up; while other times we realize we landed in a sink hole. When life is ‘perfect’ we tend to rejoice and worship God with a glad heart. Yet, when life has beaten us down a hard road we tend to look for other options and forget that the only way out is through a hearing ear, faith, and obedience to God.
It seems easier to do it your way and sometimes it even seems like the faster way to get there. But once you commit to God, honestly, whole heartedly commit your life to Him – He might take you around the block and He might even have you pouring concrete and building that hard road, but after a while it is a beautiful smooth black top.
Now, I have a very close relative of mine serving twenty years in prison. This is an extreme circumstance as an example, but this is where faith down a hard road really comes into a fight or flight situation. Regardless of why this individual has been given twenty years, it would be appropriate to state that the only way to manage this kind of unfortunate truth is to rely on God to get you through it. This is where the weak break down and the tuff grow strong.
Let’s assume that you are an innocent man, flawless if you will, similar to the story of Job. Let’s also assume that you are pleasing God, like Job, and following His call for your life and then you lose everything. Your family is killed, your livestock is gone, and your physical body becomes the devils playground. If you are serving a sentence, like twenty years in prison, you must have faith that God will deliver on His promises. Innocent or not, you are going through this hard road because if you succeed at remaining faithful to our one true God – He has amazing blessings for you at the end of that hard road. God is reaching out for you and calling your name and He will do whatever it takes to get your attention and build your faith in Him.
Sitting in confinement for twenty years is almost a lifetime. As unfortunate as this seems, look up, He is there with you and you are never alone. He is watching over you and waiting for you to call upon His name. Nehemiah 9:3, “But in your great mercy you did not put an end to them or abandon them, for you are a gracious and merciful God.”
It is through faith that He changes our hearts, molds His word into the root of your heart and transforms you into something better than you could ever become on your own. In twenty years, you will either walk out of that prison a new man full of faith in God and assured a place in heaven; one more soul saved from the depths of hell or you’ll be just another sinner, ignorant in the Commands of God and on judgment day God will say, “I never knew you – Away from me, you evildoers” (Matthew 7:23).
Looking back on hard times and knowing for certain that more storms will come in the future I can only hope for each of you that you lean not on your own understanding, but rely on God and have faith in him that under his wing He allows you to take refuge. Regardless of the time period in which you get back only our feet, through faith and obedience, you will look back at the hard road and be thankful.
You will be thankful because with God you are guaranteed to be in a better place than you were when the road began. This doesn’t mean that you will be a millionaire when you’re done following God, nor does it mean God will dismiss your twenty year sentence, but if you are obedient to Him in faith; you will be transformed, spiritually reborn and a coheir of the kingdom of God. There is not a price tag you can put on that kind of gift.
Daniel 4:37-38 Praise and exalt and glorify the King of heaven, because everything he does is right and all his ways are just. And those who walk in pride he is able to humble.
